Speaker: Darden Bell, CPA from Keiter

Topic: Tax Strategies for Real Estate Investors (touching on all asset classes from residential, commercial, mixed-use, student housing, retail and more)…followed by Q&A session with Paul Staples, CPA from Keiter

Darden has over 11 years of experience in public accounting providing tax consulting and compliance services for privately owned businesses and individuals. Darden’s focus at Keiter includes flow-through taxation, with emphasis on partnership taxation, and the impact on the individual owners of flow-through entities. He has a deep understanding of the new Section 199A deduction impacting flow-through businesses. Many of his clients are concentrated in the real estate and construction industry, including commercial, mixed-use and residential developments; but he also serves a variety of other industries including equipment dealers, medical, software development, and startup companies. Additionally, Darden utilizes his expertise and knowledge in structuring transactions to assist his clients in understanding the tax implications of proposed contracts and to assist them in modifying operating agreements to better align with the economics of the business while achieving the maximum tax savings.

Darden is a member of Keiter’s Real Estate & Construction Industry team and serves clients throughout Virginia including Richmond, Charlottesville, Roanoke, and the New River Valley.Paul Staples focuses on business tax planning and compliance, general business consulting, transaction advisory, and individual tax for privately-held clients with an emphasis on limited liability companies and flow-through taxation. Many of Paul’s clients are in the real estate and financial service industries, including multi-family and manufactured housing portfolios, alternative investment vehicles, and broker/dealers; but he also serves a variety of other industries including equipment dealers, startup companies, and insurance brokers. Paul also assists clients with evaluating tax and business implications of asset and stock purchases/sales, mergers, like-kind exchange transactions, and reorganizations.

Paul is a member of the Firm’s industry niche teams for Real Estate & Construction and Financial Services, and serves on the Firm’s internal workflow committees.
